How to spend your time in Yufuin

To start, since many of you may be coming to Japan via Fukuoka, the city offers so many things to do; it's a great place to stay before and after the wedding. We'd probably imagine that the most convenient trip starts in Fukuoka for a night or two to adjust, stops by Yufuin via a morning train for the wedding, and then rounds out with a return trip to Fukuoka or another city. For that, we have the Fukuoka guides; we hope you find them helpful.

However, if you're going all in on the Yufuin area, my honest recommendation for here is to eat well, visit onsens as much as you can, and do very little sightseeing — because that is what the traditional ryokan experience is. Arrive around 3pm, have tea and Japanese sweets in your room, change into your yukata, walk the onsen street, soak (not just stay in the water — cool on the rocks, then go back in, repeat), return to the inn, dine at the kaiseki dinner. Wake up, onsen again, then breakfast. Let the hospitality take care of you.

The surrounding area is genuinely beautiful, and the sightseeing is worth it if you have extra days. I've made three itineraries — one for a single day in town, one that goes up into the highlands, and a longer plan for those who want to see the outer areas.

YUFUiNFO
Arrive — 由布院駅
由布院駅
Yufuin Station · Foot Bath

The station was designed by Isozaki Arata in 1990 — a black modernist building that still feels deliberate. A foot bath sits on Platform 1; purchase a ticket at the counter (includes a souvenir towel). The YUFUiNFO building next door is the main tourist center: coin lockers, a bag-forwarding service to your inn, over 2,000 books and pamphlets about the area, and an observation deck on the second floor.

Yunotsubo Kaidō · The Main Street

Yufuin's main pedestrian street running toward the lake, lined with cafés, restaurants, and specialty shops. It's become a little touristy over the years but the food is genuinely good. Look for the 金賞コロッケ (Gold Prize Croquette) — served fresh and hot in original, cheese, and curry varieties. Good for souvenirs and lunch on the go.

Kinrinko · Gold-Scale Lake

Named after the way the fish scales catch the sunset light. Spring water and geothermal water meet here, keeping the temperature unusually warm year-round and creating slow mist off the surface on cool mornings — try to arrive before 9:30 to catch it. The loop takes about 20 minutes. La Ruche sits lakeside for coffee or lunch. Tenso Shrine is right on the bank with a torii gate that appears to rise from the water.

ゆのつぼ温泉

Grab some towels and toiletries at the convenience store on Yunotsubo, and head to a simple, quiet unmanned bathhouse with soft water gentle on the skin. Interior finished in granite and Japanese cypress. Rebuilt in 1995 and cleaned several times daily — clean and comfortable despite the no-staff setup.

COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN

The striking black building was designed by 隈研吾 (Kengo Kuma). A contemporary art museum with works by seven leading Japanese artists, including 草間彌生 (Yayoi Kusama), 村上隆 (Takashi Murakami), and 奈良美智 (Yoshitomo Nara).

Option B  ·  Food, Shrine & View
山荘三四郎 山荘三四郎
13:00 — 10-minute walk from station
山荘三四郎
由布山椒郎 · Yufu Sanshoro

Slightly off the main corridor so it's quieter. The awase-bako set arrives as a lacquerbox of colourful seasonal vegetables with Bungo beef underneath — better than it sounds. Walk-in only; arrive by 13:30 on weekends. Cash only. Open 11:00–15:00.

大杵社 大杵社の社殿
14:30 — 10-minute walk south of station
大杵社

Look for two moss-coloured guardian shrine dogs at the entrance. A 1,000-year-old holy cedar — designated a national natural monument — stands here with a rope around it; a small statue of a deity lives inside the hollow.

霧島展望台 狭霧台からの由布院盆地の眺め
16:00 — 15-min taxi on Yamanami Hwy, ~¥3,500
霧島展望台  ·  Sagiri-dai

The view over the Yufuin basin and Mt. Yufu from this hilltop lookout is really beautiful. Dusk is the obvious time to go. In autumn and winter mornings, sea-fog moves through the valley below in slow waves.

Your inn, or a public option
温泉
Onsen · Evening Soak

Your ryokan will have one. If you want a public option, Otomaru Onsen (¥200, very no-frills, coin goes in a box) is the honest local choice. Yufuin Tsukanoma has a cobalt-blue outdoor pool and is the more polished version.

Oct 12  ·  Hakata
博多着 — Arrive, eat well, rest
Afternoon — Check in
博多 · Hakata

Check in to your hotel in Tenjin or around Hakata Station. Nakasu Kawabata shopping arcade is right there if you want to stretch your legs. The honest recommendation: do nothing in particular. Morning onsen, a slow breakfast, a walk along Kinrinko lake, back to the onsen. The ryokan experience is the thing — let it take care of you. If you find yourself wanting more, the Yufuin Town tab has a full stop-by-stop day plan.

The bridge is 45 metres over the gorge, decorated with murals by local schoolchildren and The Cabin Company. The gorge itself requires descending steep stairs into a canyon that took 600,000 years to form. Sixty-metre walls, waterfalls on the rock faces, jade-green water. Allow about 1.5 hours. Water-friendly shoes are helpful. ¥100 environmental fee, open 9:00–16:00.

Yaseuma — chewy wheat noodles with kinako powder — for dessert; they were invented in this area. Open 11:00–15:00, closed 1st and 3rd Mondays.

or — Specialty coffee break
TOAST COFFEE ROASTER

朴の木 旧校舎 外観
朴の木 旧校舎 アート展示
13:30 — Abandoned school turned art space
朴の木 旧校舎
Hoenoki Old School · The Cabin Company

The Cabin Company's base: a primary school that ran for 111 years and closed in 2011, now an open art space with a courtyard full of ginkgo trees. The café (kafé hōnoki) runs Thursday and Saturday 11:00–15:00 with local rice and mountain vegetables — food requires advance reservation.

白嶽神社の学びの石
15:30 — Cedar grove, sacred stone
白嶽神社
Shiratake Shrine

There's a smooth stone in the shrine grounds said to grant wisdom when touched — worn round by centuries of hands. The cedar grove alone is worth the stop. The upper shrine adds about 15 minutes of climbing and views of Mt. Yufu and Tsurumi.

Oct 16  ·  Shonai
庄内 — The most remote. An active national park, ancient springs, and a waterfall.
9:00 — 45 minutes from Yufuin
御池ガーデン
Oike Garden · Japan's Hundred Greatest Waters

10:30 — 10 minutes downstream from Oike
名水の滝
Meisuinotaki Waterfall Walk

The springs drop into a powerful waterfall framed by root systems gripping mossy boulders the size of cars. The path is gentle and forest-shaded — dramatic payoff for easy effort. Check the information board at the car park first since typhoon damage occasionally closes sections.

12:00 — Beside the Oike entrance
黒岳コーヒー
Kurokake Coffee

Opened in 2024. They brew specialty coffee with the spring water — clean and round with no bitterness. Vinyl jazz playing. Open 9:00–17:00, occasional weather closures so worth checking social media before making the drive.

Built inside a converted elementary school — long wooden corridors, wide communal pools, a nice mix of locals and travellers. Indoor, outdoor, and private baths available. Open 11:00–22:00 (until 21:00 Oct–Mar), closed 2nd Wednesdays.

16:00 — Deep forest, through a tunnel
龍昇の滝
Ryusho-no-Taki · Dragon Ascending Falls

Near the Dairin-harakuchi bus stop on Route 210, a path runs through deep forest to a tunnel so small you have to crouch through it. On the other side: two waterfalls dropping into a grotto of extraordinary green moss. It's on private land so if you pass anyone at the farmhouse nearby, a brief acknowledgment is appreciated. No entrance fee, no signage.
